AccuShred Gets Green with Evertreen
On June 5, World Environment Day, AccuShred announced a new partnership with Evertreen. Evertreen is an international organization committed to environmental responsibility and initiatives such as combating deforestation and promoting habitat protection. As a shredding service, AccuShred has always been conscious of the importance of recycling. Our partnership with Evertreen takes things a step further.
Who is Evertreen?
Evertreen is a platform intended to connect individuals and businesses with the power to make a tangible and positive impact on the environment. Many businesses want to do something to help offset their carbon impact, but need a partner who can actually put that desire into action. Tree planting will have a significant impact on improving the climate crisis, and that is where Evertreen has focused their environmental efforts.
Evertreen aims to plant trees where they are most needed and can be the most beneficial to the local community. One of the things that makes Evertreen unique is that they put their efforts into financing local farmers around the world, which ensures that the farmers and farming community will get the economic benefits of this initiative. By planting trees, Evertreen supports these local economies and communities, grants stable employment to the farmers, and improves the environment. Evertreen is currently supporting tree planting efforts in twelve countries worldwide.
Why is Reforestation So Important?
Reforestation plants trees where forests have previously been depleted, either due to natural causes, like wildfires, storms, and infestations, or man-made causes, like clearing land for buildings or other industries. The depletion of forests, often referred to as deforestation, has consequences that go beyond simply removing natural resources.
Trees are essential for fighting climate change. Trees absorb carbon dioxide (CO2) and produce oxygen. Carbon dioxide is a main source of the greenhouse gasses that are contributing to climate change. By planting trees strategically, these new forests will remove carbon emissions from the atmosphere. However, this is a long process. Mature forests can remove a significant amount of carbon from the atmosphere, but forests can take a long time to reach maturity, and the act of planting requires careful planning to ensure that the new trees will be able to grow and thrive. Choosing the right spot and right trees is imperative to reforestation success. Once the trees are planted, they will be vulnerable for a period as they establish their root system.
This is why organizations like Evertreen are so important. The team at Evertreen takes the time to research, prepare, and organize their plantings so they have the greatest chance of success, and therefore, the best impact on the environment. Partnering with Evertreen allows businesses to contribute to reforestation without the risk of ineffective measures that can ultimately cause more harm than good.
How an Evertreen Partnership Works
Evertreen connects with businesses to establish their own company forest, gift trees to clients and employees, and monitor the health and progression of their efforts via video and satellite updates. When partnering with Evertreen, businesses can collaborate in several different ways. A business can establish a company forest, gift trees to clients and employees, and even monitor their forest via videos and satellites. Evertreen partners can choose how to select the number of trees that are planted, and will have the option of setting up a recurring planting plan.
AccuShred and Evertreen
Different businesses can choose different ways to partner with Evertreen and choose the number of trees they plant. AccuShred has chosen to partner with Evertreen by committing to planting one tree per ton of paper that we shred and recycle every month.
In addition, for every new customer that signs up for recurring services, AccuShred has committed to planting five additional trees. AccuShred’s ultimate goal is to plant over 2,500 trees yearly based on these parameters. By tying the number of trees AccuShred is committed to planting with the amount of shredded and recycled material, we are hoping to prioritize the different ways that we, alongside our customers, can reduce our carbon footprint.
Our company president, Nate Segall, feels that support for the environment is already ingrained in what AccuShred does with its recycling efforts, as nearly all materials shredded are already being recycled. We have been very vocal about our role as a sustainable company and will always seek out additional partnerships with companies that share the same values.
To demonstrate the commitment to this project, we began with planting 100 trees, but in the three months since AccuShred has started our partnership in June, we have already planted 655 trees, which includes 45 trees that we gifted to various clients.
This planting has helped three different countries begin to reforest, has created over 80 hours of work for local farmers, and has offset over 500 tonnes of CO2. Forests in Honduras, Madagascar, and Nepal have already benefited from this partnership.
